Subject: RE: Rotary Friend from India - NASA Project

Hi President David

Warm Rotary Greetings. We are much obliged on seeing your mail and also excited with Thanks.

Let me first narrate you the project.

The prime objective of this project is to take children from down trodden community and that too having good skills in science and technology  - take them to NASA in order to motivate them for their better career and also show them the scientific developments around the world. The entire cost of the project is borne by the Rotarians of the Tirupur North Rotary Club.

Normally in India people from Low income group (having monthly family income from $100 to $200) study in Government run free schools. We conducted Scientific Project Presentation Competition for students from various Government Schools and selected 25 students from a lot of 400 participants(photo attached). As a preamble, we thought of taking the children to ISRO (Indian Satellite Research Organization) – Satellite center. We got special permission and we took these 25 children to ISRO Satellite center Bangalore on 3rd Feb 2011 and showed them how satellites are made and various activities of ISRO (Photo Attached). If things go well, for all these students, this will be their first journey on the sky and all of them have seen the flight only on movies and TV shows.

Through Rtn.Jagdip we contacted Ms.Sabrina of NASA and gave a request letter to NASA on 4.1.2011 (Letter attached) and waiting for the approval letter from NASA. As soon as we receive the approval letter we can conclude the VISA and ticketing formalities. We have planned to have 2-3 days visit in Texas, a day in Washington and return back via New York. The program can be scheduled in the month of June 2011.

We would be much pleased to have this project as a joint project with Space Center Rotary Club and Rotary Club of Tirupur North, India. We can have a common name and monogram for this project. I can make Caps and T Shirts ready which can give a better hype to the project.

I need your help in the following aspects:

1.       Getting  the permission to visit NASA Center (Sabrina may know the status of our request letter already given through her in NASA)

2.       Suggestions for a day or 2 visit in Texas area apart from NASA. We would be honoured if space center Rotarians join us in the visit.

3.       If possible if you could arrange for a dormitory stay or Home hospitality in Houston for these 25 children and 5 Rotarians, it would be more helpful.

Please reply me your possibilities and willingness in the various aspects of the project. Hope to join hands with you.

With regards

Maddy

Dear Governor Sunny Sharma

Thanks for your kind concern.

As such we don’t have any time request. But I think on your schedules any time between 21st to 30th June 2011 will be idle. After getting visit approval letter from NASA we need time to apply Visa for the children and arrange for ticketing.

Our primary objective is to take the children to NASA. If it takes a day, we could spend a day or more in Houston which you may suggest. Sabarina in her previous mail suggested that she could arrange a meet with Indian scientist with these children. But the possibility is left to her. After Houston we plan to visit Washington for a day and return back through New York.

If possible if you could arrange for a dormitory stay or Home hospitality in Houston for these 20 children and 5 Rotarians, it would be more helpful. Please note – if possible.

The project can also be made as a joint project with Space Center Rotary Club. We would be honoured. Else a New Generation project between the districts D5890 and D3202. We are open for any possible suggestions.

Hope I have answered your queries. You are open to alter or change any of the plans at your convenience. Eagerly waiting for your reply.

Dear Maddy,

I am forwarding your request to Mr. David Coney, who is the President of the Space Center Rotary club. April and May are quite busy months for our Rotarians as we will have our District Conference from April 27 thru May 1, 2011 and the International Convention is from May 27 thru June 2, 2011. Please let us know what your planned dates of arrival and how many days are you planning to stay in Houston area. As I understand that only assistance you are requiring from us is to schedule a visit for all of you to see NASA which is almost a whole day’s affair. Upon receiving of all the details we will be happy to assist in your visit to our city. Depending upon your length of stay and days of stays we may be able to recommend other visits for you.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours In Rotary Service,

Sunny Sharma

Dear DG Sunny Sharma

Warm Greetings from Rtn.Na.Mathavan(you can call me - Maddy) from RI D 3202 India – Tirupur. My mail is in continuation of our DG Nayannar’s conversation with you over phone regarding the NASA project.

Our Club is willing to take 25 students from downtrodden section studying in Government and municipal schools to NASA, USA (age 15-17 years). We plan this project to motivate them for their better career and to show them the scientific developments around the world. For the above we have selected 20 students through competitions and as a preamble we have taken them to ISRO Satellite center Bangalore in the month of Feb. Our Club is planning to bear the entire cost.

In this regard I contacted Rtn.Jagdip (Former inbound GSE Team leader to our District) and on his advice and through Ms.Sabrina we have forward a request to NASA in Jan 2011. I have attached the letter we have send through Ms.Sabrina to NASA.

Till now we do not know the status of our request.

We kindly request you to help us in getting the permission to visit NASA.

Dear Sir,

Your email is very motivating and touching- you have really made a difference in these lives by taking them to ISRO.  Having District Sunny Sharma’s office deliver the letter to Director Mike Coats will greatly improve chances of this event happening.  I have rearranged my schedule so that we can accommodate your visit in June- I am anxiously waiting for the approval.

I sent an inquiry to the senior office one week and have not heard in this regard but will let you know as soon as I know something.  I am sorry that I do not have better news at this point.

Thank you for the email and update, as I will also forward this to the senior office to let them know your very active interest and commitment.

Thank you

sabrina

Dear Sabrina

Warm greetings.

Let me update the details happened here on the NASA project.

We have conducted competitions (Aptitude and Science Project Presentation) among schools and selected the 25 candidates (20 plus 5 in waiting list) among the 178 attended. On 4th Feb we took these students to ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) Satellite center, for them to have a preamble on space science before they come to NASA. We had a detail walk through on the center at Bangalore. This is the place where they make Satellites in India. This center is managed by Ministry of Space – Government of India. Next week we are to start the passport process for these students. We may be able to get the passport number for all these children within the end of this month.

Any updates from NASA? I have asked my district governor to contact the local governor Rtn.Sunny Sharma in USA in the regards.

Please reply.

Regards

Maddy

Dear Sir,

I am also as eager as you are.  As of now, I have done what I can.  I have given the letter to Mr. Coats staff and responses can take a month.  I am hoping that the other contacts Mr. Jagdip has will be able to simultaneously push this forward.

I assure you that as soon as I hear something I will immediately let you know.  Thank you for inquiring,

The dates are flexible on their end but I think we might end up doing it in June.  I want to make sure NASA approves their visit before they proceed with travel arrangements, to save them unnecessary time/expenses.  Thanks for getting Space Center Rotary involved.

Dear Sir,

I hope this email finds you in good health and happiness in the new year.  I apologize for the delayed response as I was traveling and without email access.  I am happy about this project you are undertaking and will work diligently to help as best I can.

Can you please email the letter again?  There were not many people at NASA over the past two weeks with the Christmas holidays.  I will send the letter this week to the appropriate offices.  I recommend that you also follow up with Mr. Jagdip about circulating the request through our DG and the rotary club associated with the NASA community.

Best wishes,

Sabrina

This is fantastic!  Yes, a letter as you instructed will be best because the group is so large and it is all foreign nationals.  It is best that you are starting the process early.

I will personally hand deliver it to some of the senior executive staff here.  It is also best that it comes in multiple channels through DG Sunny and the Clear Lake Rotary Club.

I think it would also be useful for me to invite several young professionals of Indian background to meet with these students.  It serves as positive role modeling and will be a good exchange of experiences.  One thing to note is that I will be in India from April 27-May 25.
