Club Meeting Review
By Jerrold Dewease

A Day of Sadness, Excitement, and Eager Anticipation

This, the last club meeting for the Rotary Year 2009-10, June 28,  was filled with mixed emotions.  It was proclaimed Jon R. McKinnie Day by the City of Houston "…in recognition of his community spirit, and involvement in local, state, and national civic activities.  Jon R. McKinnie's honors include "Outstanding Young Business Leaders to Watch" in America, and "Rotarian of the Year" for Arkansas (2005) and Houston (2009) among many others."  See  presentation of Proclamation. The incoming  President,  Officers, and  Directors  for Rotary Year 2101-11 were "sworn in" by  District 5890 Governor Sunny Sharma.   He also recognized two new members,  Santiago Mendoza   and   Bimal Vora, making them the 20th and 21st new members for the year.

Outgoing President McKinnie completed giving his awards out and officially passed the  Presidential Gavel  to incoming President Coney.  Incoming President Coney presented outgoing President McKinnie with a plaque of appreciation and President McKinnie's favorite, a bottle of Scotch.  Stan Galanski received the Club's Rotarian of Year Award  and his wife Susan a   Paul Harris Fellow.   Stan also received the Rotary International "Service Above Self" award in April, an award given only to 150 persons worldwide.  Stan has been actively involved with water projects in Bolivia since 2004.

With a note of sadness the club members said goodbye to two inbound International Exchange Students who had been with local families and attended local high schools for a year.  They were  Sirida Sombatto (Jen)  (center) inbound International Exchange Students from Thailand and Leonardo Briones  (left) from Edcuador.   Also present were other  International Exchange Students.

Pam Ugalde and Donna Hussey, San Jacinto Girl Scouts, were given $1,000 to be used to help the troop members earn Silver and Gold Awards, and to start a new Daisy (kindergarten age) troop.

And last but not least club members met the Coney family.

The first meeting of the Rotary year kicked off to a great start.  President Elect Mike Dennard officiated, with Assistant District 5890 Governor Chris Schneider welcoming the year's first new member, Darryl Smith.  District Governor Schneider was assisted by sponsor Mary Alice Cherry and Director, Club Administration, Kippy Caraway.

John Branch, Programs Committee Chair, introduced the speaker, Dr. John Jacob, Director of the Texas Coastal Watershed Program.  Dr. Jacob reminded the membership that population growth in coastal areas has resulted in significantly more folks in harms way when a hurricane does hit.  He discussed Hurricane Carly, a hypothetical worst case scenario model, and recapped information from the Coastal Resilience Symposium held at Rice University.  He also compared the structural and non-structural approaches to damage mitigation, comparing the proposed Ike Dike as a structural solution, and restricted land use as an example of a non-structural solution.  Dr. Jacob stated that there are two kinds of levees:  those that have failed, and those that will fail.  He also touched on the moral hazard of structural-only approaches, in that they create a false feeling of safety for those living behind them.  He discussed the need to work with nature instead of against nature.

A Planning Committee meeting for the October Shrimporee was announced, with a call for additional volunteers, especially among the red badgers.

President  David Coney,   his first officiating,  kicked off the July 19th meeting with a mental scavenger hunt describing one of the Club members and asked those in attendance to guess who it might be.  Needless to say, we've got folks with a very impressive list of Rotary accomplishments.  You'll have to make the meeting to see who gets "scavengered" next.  President Coney also reported that, thanks to last year's fabulous fund raising efforts, the Club has a proposed budget of $106,371 for the year.

Melissa Beach and Kim Woodard, representing the Noah's Landing Foundation, announced that the Foundation is partnering with Extreme Home Makeover on another area project.  The Foundation has been asked to raise $50,000 to pay for such items as air conditioners, doors and windows.  The project is expected to be significantly different than prior Makeover projects, and will focus on more than one family in the community.  More details will be available July 25th.

Phil Sandlin introduced Houston Police Department (HPD) Community Liaison Officer Randy Derr,   Officer Derr has served HPD for 31 years, 26 of which have been in Clear Lake.   The Clear Lake substation is responsible for a district that is bounded by Airport Boulevard on the north and NASA Road One to the south.  Officer Derr reported that the biggest problem in the general Bay Area has been car burglaries.  It is also one of the most preventable crimes.  He explained the difference between a robbery and a burglary, provided tips for personal safety and handling a robbery, and for office and home security.  Officer Derr answered a wide range of questions from the membership, and was presented with a thank you gift by President Coney in appreciation of his time.

Announcements included the August 14th Pancake Breakfast to raise funds for the Space Center Rotary Endowment Foundation, and the August 14th Membership Seminar to be conducted by Past President Jon McKinnie.  Roger Donnelly, Fellowship Chair, announced that the next family fellowship is scheduled for 6 pm on August 5th at Putt Putt Fun House.  The event is hosted by Jim Saxe, and is free of charge, so be sure to bring the kids, grandkids, neighbors kids...even the big kids!

Members attending the July 26th Rotary meeting managed to avoid the forecasted thunderstorms, dodging only slight precipitation as they made their way into Bay Oaks Country Club.  President David Coney convened the meeting, which was kicked off with a quick rendition of "The Yellow Rose of Texas".  Visitors and guests were introduced, after which Scott Rainey updated the membership on Shrimporee Sponsorships.  Scott started the meeting with $13,000 in pledges, collected several checks, and managed to increase the pledge commitments to $15,000 before he gave up the microphone.  Checks were collected from Jerrold Dewease of Space Center Automotive, and Vissett Sun of Hopping Eye Center.  Other confirmed donors include Texas Wealth Management, Norman Frede Chevrolet, Icon Bank, Texas Citizens Bank, and Community Management Solutions.  Members are encouraged to solicit additional sponsorships.  Forms can be found on the Club website.

Roger Donnelly reminded members to bring family and friends to the August 5th Family Fellowship at Putt Putt Fun House.  The event begins at 6 pm and is free to members, family and friends.  Roger also informed the membership of the sudden death of Traig Thomas, a frequent server at Rotary functions at the Club.  Traig's mother also works in the Bay Oaks Country Club Grille.  The funeral is today in New Orleans, and help is needed with expenses.  A basket was passed among the membership.  Roger also provided today's "Bust Your Button" moment as he reported his 2nd grade grandson's exceptional basketball skills which were exhibited at a recent sports camp.

Jack Bacon, Rotary Exchange Team Counselor, relayed the need for an exchange student host family to begin the school year, preferably within CCISD boundaries.  The family will be hosting Adam, a talented chorister arriving from Slovakia.  President Coney took time for the Rotary Guess Who Game, ultimately confirming Debbie McBride as holder of multiple black belts in different forms of karate and part owner of her own studio.  Debbie will be moving to Cozumel, at which time she promises to take reservations for her spare room.  Members are reminded that a good turnout is needed for the Membership Seminar on August 14th, hosted by Past President Jon McKinnie.

President Coney provided a quick list of Rotary firsts, noting that from the first Rotary Club meeting in 1905, Rotary spread "like wildfire".  He challenged members to ensure that Rotary spreads like wildfire in the local community as well.  John Nugent announced that the Space Center Rotary Wine Club is starting up again.  The next meeting will be Thursday evening at the Allegria Wine Bar on Old Galveston Road.

John Branch introduced Commander Christopher Moss, Commanding Officer, Coast Guard Air Station Houston.  Commander Moss reported that the Coast Guard encompasses about 40,000 people in total.  The Coast Guard has three primary missions:  Search and Rescue, Maritime Environmental Protection, and Homeland Security.  Commander Moss reported that the Galena Park office staff will be moving to Ellington somewhere in the 2012-13 timeframe, resulting in about 300 additional folks staffed at the Ellington station.  Currently Ellington has about 87 active duty and 90 auxiliary reserve members.  A lot of their auxiliary folks are deployed to support Deep Water Horizon efforts.  Commander Moss noted that Air Station Houston typically handles about 200 search and rescue cases a year.  Their area of responsibility stretches from the Colorado River/Matagorda Bay area on the west side of Houston, to White Lake Louisiana, and includes 3700 oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.  Platform personnel are generally supported by private helicopter services, but the Coast Guard uses the platforms as refueling stations.  He discussed armed helicopter capabilities and training locations, the economic impact and community involvement of Coast Guard stations/personnel, and the significant shift in Coast Guard funding resulting from their 2001 transfer from the Department of Transportation to the Department of Homeland Security.  Commander Moss answered a variety of questions, and noted that Air Station Houston is considered a good duty station in part due to the great school district and reasonable cost of living.

President Coney adjourned the meeting with a reminder to keep Rotary member Stan Galanski in thoughts and prayers as he recovers from surgery.

"Building Communities -
Bridging Continents"
By President Coney

It is truly a great day to be a Rotarian. I can just feel it in the air that this is going to be a fantastic year for Space Center Rotary Club and for the people in our community and around the world that we serve.  The theme "Building Communities-Bridging Continents" resonates well with me as I think about all of the wonderful projects and material impact that Rotarians make around the globe.

I am so happy to have the opportunity to serve as president this year and feel truly blessed to have so many wonderful people to serve with. I think the work that we do is very important and I also feel that we should have fun doing it.  I hope we take the time we spend together on Monday's to have a good time, get to know each other better and better and if you come up with a good idea for Rotary, please don't keep it a secret but let me know.
Your President,
David Coney

The August 2nd meeting kicked off with a reminder to buy tickets for the pancake breakfast August 14th.  Tickets are $7 each, of 5 for $30.  Visitors and guests were introduced, and then Roger Donnelly reminded everyone to bring family and friends to Putt Putt Fun House Thursday night for free games and fun.  Scott Rainey recognized additional Shrimporee sponsors John Davis -Texas State Representative, Johnnie White - State Farm Agent, Tim Kropp of MRI, Rae DeCastro of Las Colinas Interiors, and Mike Duckworth of Hometown Bank.

President Coney provided a pop quiz, asking members if they know what happens to the banners like the one displayed by Gary Johnson from the South Reno Rotary Club.  Each banner is digitized and posted on the Club history web site.  Jerrold Dewease has invested hundreds of hours documenting the Club’s extensive history.  To see the banner collection, go to www.spacecenterrotary.org, look under Club Links on the left side of the screen, click on Club History, then scroll down to Exchanged Club Banners.

Alan Wiley recognized his father, Jess Alvin Wiley, with a Paul Harris Fellow.  Jess Wiley passed away in 1998.  His impressive history of career accomplishments and community involvement began with his entry into the banking industry in 1928.  President Coney performed a ceremonial banner change, posting the new 2010-2011 Rotary International banner with the new theme Building Communities Bridging Continents.

Assistant District 5890 Governor (ADG) Chris Schneider (photo insert) was introduced.  ADG Schneider brought greetings from District 5890 Governor Sunny Sharma and his wife Rashmi.  His presentation included introduction of the new Rotary International theme, the leadership team, goals, a calendar of events, and Rotary resources.  He reviewed the objectives handed down from the Rotary International leadership of explaining Rotary to non-Rotarians, and validating the work of Rotarians.  He discussed Rotary as a “spirit of services” in addition to the more common definition as an organization.  ADG Schneider recognized the numerous accomplishments of the Rotary of Space Center membership, and noted that the primary purpose of the District is to serve the Rotary clubs.  He reviewed the five lanes of service, recapped the District goals in the areas of membership, Rotary Foundation, training, service, public image, District Conference and administration.  He also restated the membership wide goal to “share Rotary and have fun”.  The upcoming calendar of events includes the official Governors visit on September 27th, Rotary Foundation Seminar on September 25th, and the Be a Friend Dinner on October 22nd.

President Coney recognized the volunteer efforts of several members, including Past District 5890 Governor Suzi Howe for her donation to Polio Plus.  He announced that Director of Club Administration, Kippy Caraway, has been asked to organize the District 5890 Conference, and recognized past President Jon McKinnie as District Chief of Staff with oversight responsibility for 20 committees.  Homework assignments for those in attendance are to log on to the Rotary web site and tinker with the various web pages.

President Coney conducted the weekly guess who game, ultimately identifying J.B. Fox via the final clue.  President Coney also reviewed the origins of the 4 Way Test, which was officially adopted by Rotary in 1943.  He also noted that Interact, Rotaract and Earlyact are now using the 4 Way Test in school programs.

Mike Dennard announced a Shrimporee planning meeting tomorrow at JSC Credit Union.  Alice May-Sexton and Slade Lewis were recognized for completing all of their red badge requirements.

John Branch introduced the day's speaker, Bob Savely, Chief Scientist for Robotics Software and Simulation at Johnson Space Center.  Mr. Savely showed a video about the JSC Robotics program, which began in 2006.  He recapped the current partnership between JSC and General Motors.  GM funds support the development of the next generation of Robotics and support exploration needs.  The partnership also supports the NASA charter to transfer NASA technology to the private sector.  Mr. Savely discussed NASA's reliance on extra vehicular activities and noted that the use of robotics makes EVAs more productive and reduces the risk for astronauts.  The new generation of robots (R2) is stronger, faster, and smarter than the R1.  The concept is to make robots that are safe to work with people.

After the presentation, President Coney announced the Endowment Foundation meeting at 7 Tuesday morning, and reminded members of the Shrimporee meeting at 5:30 Tuesday night.  The meeting was adjourned.

Good Food, Good Time, Good Cause
by  Jerrold Dewease

About 150 Rotarians, family, and friends enjoyed a delicious breakfast at the semi-annual pancake breakfast held at Nassau Bay Baptist Church Saturday.  President Coney, Mike Dennard, Sheryl Berg, and Scott Rainey could be seen among the guests.  New members Alice May-Sexton and Darryl Smith and their families joined about 15 of the Club members in preparing the meal, and setting up the kitchen, serving lines and tables.

Breakfast Chairman Jack Lister stated turnout was a little less than the last breakfast and preliminary results indicate about $1,200 was raised.  The money will be donated to the Space Center Rotary Club Endowment Foundation.  Over $30,000 has been donated to the Foundation since it was formed in 1991 by the breakfast and dinner fundraisers.

Enjoy the breakfast by viewing the photos taken by Bob Mitchell.

It's a great day to be a Space Center Rotarian!
A Message from the President

I woke up this past Saturday August 14th with a real passion for Rotary. I got an early start as I was to meet my good friend Jerrold Dewease at the pancake breakfast by 6:30 in the morning. On my ride to Nassau Bay, I thought about what it is that the Space Center Rotary Endowment Foundation does and why we were having a pancake breakfast. Besides the wonderful fellowship working together in the kitchen and the honor of having Floyd Boze himself pin you as a Floyd Boze Fellow, our foundation has a much higher calling. Just as in the old fable where the ants work diligently to pile up food for winter while the grasshoppers play and live hand to mouth, our Foundation is working hard to raise funds that will not be spent any time soon. If we could tell the future, I think we are going to be so proud of what our Foundation does in the years ahead. One day, the Foundation will grow large enough where the interest can be used to make a meaningful impact in the community year after year. We may have enough to do a brick and mortar project in our own backyard, give scholarships and fund projects that help people in need. Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket and attended the breakfast.I think if you could get in a time machine and go into the future you would be so happy that you spent that seven dollars.

After a great breakfast, I piled into Mike Dennard's car with Rena Dietrich and Bob Taggart and headed to the district membership seminar. When we got there, I was impressed to see an auditorium full of Rotarians and was very happy to see Jon McKinnie orchestrating the event, Suzi Howe answering countless questions, Kippy Caraway teaching a class, and our Assistant Governor Chris Schneider making sure Space Center Rotarians had everything they needed.I have to admit being the President of Space Center Rotary is a very cool feeling because when you tell other Rotarians in our district that you are a member of Space Center Rotary Club, you immediately get their attention and they usually comment about how awesome our Club is.The work that we do is well respected by our peers. We learned a lot about membership at the seminar and were also honored by achievements made last year.  I think Kippy Caraway probably walked about a half mile between her seat and the auditorium stage as she collected four awards honoring our Club.  Under Jon's presidency and Kippy's leadership as membership chair, our Club earned the following awards.  Kippy was recognized by the District with the most new members proposed award. Our Club took a first place award for the Club with the largest percentage of net member growth and was among the top achievers for most new members and most members proposing new members.  Inserted photo is Assistant District Governor Schneider, Kippy, and Jon.  I am so pleased to be a Rotarian and look forward to seeing you all on Monday!

Yours in Rotary,

David

Kippy extended a special thanks to past President Jon McKinnie for his support and to AG Chris Schneider for his constant promotion of Rotary.

Suzi Howe requested volunteers to help with registration and refreshments at the September 25th Rotary Foundation Seminar.  She also discussed the need to make sure that our kids and grand kids have received their polio immunization.  President Coney announced that September 9th is Rotary Day at the Astros.  The Astros will be playing the LA Dodgers.  Portions of the ticket proceeds will support Polio Plus.  The Be-A-Friend Dinner is scheduled for October 22nd.  This is a District-wide event to thank other non-governmental organizations for their support and partnerships with Rotary.  Sara Maben, President of the Clear Lake High School Interact Club, recapped last year’s projects and reported that 46 new members were registered at Freshman Orientation.

Dick Meyer recognized the International Exchange Committee members.  He introduced Exchange students Adam Keve from Slovakia, Ale Sigimondi  from Italy, and Mina Aras   from Turkey, along with their counselors Jack Bacon, Alice May-Sexton, and Marsene Boldt.  President Coney welcomed the students and presented each one with a Space Center Rotary blue badge.

Mike “ Big Shrimp ” Dennard announced that teams have been assigned for Shrimporee solicitations along an Indian Nation theme.  All Club members have been assigned to a team.  If every team meets their commitment goals, the Shrimporee will raise over $80,000 before auction funds are even calculated.  Team Chiefs are to provide updates to Chief Scott “ Gimme Wampum ” Rainey prior to each Club meeting.  Read more information on a team's functions given to the Chiefs.  Chief Rainey recognized Mark Schneider of Waldron and Schneider as an additional Shrimporee sponsor.  More sponsors are needed.  Scott announced that the Club will be partnering with Norman Frede Chevrolet to collect used cell phones that will be donated to a program that helps soldiers overseas call home.  The soldiers are provided with a 60 minute calling card so that they can call home for free.  Norman Frede Chevrolet will bring a pickup truck to the Shrimporee, and the goal is to fill the bed of the truck with donated cell phones.

President Coney introduced Tina Brown, Director of the Volunteer Houston/Bay Area program that operates out of the United Way building on Bay Area Blvd.  Tina runs the Commanders program, a summer teen volunteer program co-sponsored by the Club.  Tina introduced Commander team members Jared Lilley, Chloe Hughes, Sam Joseph, Erika Storli, and Meghan Mistry photo (with Dr. Greg Smith).  Each student mentioned different volunteer activities in which they participated.  Tina recognized Jared as a three year volunteer and student assistant.

John Branch introduced speaker Major Edward Alonzo of the Salvation Army.  Major Alonzo and his wife Delia have served with the Salvation Army for 24 years and are currently working in Pasadena serving Pasadena and east Harris County.  Major Alonzo is also a member of the Pasadena Rotary Club.  Major Alonzo expressed his appreciation both for the opportunity to speak and for the chance to make up a meeting.  He noted that the Salvation Army was founded in 1865 in England by Reverend William Booth in an effort to minister to the destitute he passed each day.  Among the programs currently offered are senior citizen activities, Meals on Wheels, a variety of social services programs such as utility assistance, counseling, prescriptions, eyeglasses, and food bags for the homeless, sports programs and character building programs for youth.  Major Alonzo is working on a program to minister to the children of families living in motels.  Many of these children stay alone all day and are in need of school supplies and backpacks in addition to supervised activities.  He discussed several popular programs such as Community Cooloff and the Thanksgiving Feast.  He reported that the Christmas bell ringers are the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Pasadena Salvation Army, bringing in $180,000 last year.  Their annual budget is $1.2 million.  The Pasadena office was the Salvation Army incident command post after Hurricane Ike in 2008.  For 40 days they served 2 meals each day, averaging 3,000 people served per day.  Major Alonzo noted that they have lots of opportunities for service projects and invited anyone interested in volunteering to come see him.

President Coney announced the Board meeting schedule for 7 am Tuesday and the meeting was adjourned.

by Kippy Caraway and Jerrold Dewease

The meeting opened with  the tradition of singing a song lead by Debbie McBride, reciting the pledge of alliance to the U.S. Flag and the Rotary Four-Way Test, and an invocation by Carlos Villagomez.  Steve Owens then extended welcomes to visitors and guests including Assistant District 5890 Governor Chris Schneider and Houston City Council member Mike Sullivan   (photo shown with Sheryl Berg.

President Coney provided the Club with interesting life facts about one of its members,
Roger Donnelly.   Wow, what an accomplished athlete!    Read more about Roger.  He also announced District 5890 activities coming up: Family Night At The Astros Thursday Evening, September 9th (two dollars of every ticket sold will go to fight Polio); District Foundation Seminar, September 25th; and "Be A Friend" Dinner, October 22nd.  Details on these events can be viewed on the District 5890 web site which can be accessed from the Club Home Page.

Roger Donnelly gave a boost to the “cell phone for soldiers” program by committing his unit of the American Legion to help fill up a pickup truck with used cell phones.   Micki Czarnik     briefed the members about the activities of the "Ladies of Rotary".  They have 12 members and are meeting for lunch on a regular basis. She also noted that they  had raised $1,200 and used the money to help a wonderful family with clothing. The "Ladies" are also helping out at the Hope Village once a month.  One of their fundraisers is the Sweet Table at the Shrimporee.

Shrimporee chair Mike Dennard reminded everyone the big day is OCTOBER 16th and there would be a planning meeting Tuesday at 5:30pm at the JSC Credit Union. "Big Shrimp" Mike announced there would be a $400 gift certificate for wine tasting for 20 awarded to the team chief that got to the meeting first. He also committed to giving a good bottle of wine to the person that donated the oldest cell phone.
Scott Rainey announced three additional Shrimporee sponsors; $2,500, Lexus of Clear Lake; $1,000 Delia Stephens; and $1,000 Houston City Councilman Mike Sullivan.  He also reminded members to turn in their used cell phones for the “cell phones for soldiers” program

Bob Wren, President of the Space Center Rotary Club Endowment Foundation, announced that a sponsorship had been approved for Mitchell Mardis (read more about the sponsorship in the article following the Club review).  Past Club President Jon McKinnie made some belated awards; Steve Owens, the “Service Above Self” award and to Mike Hesse a Plaque of Appreciation and a Paul Harris Fellow (his third).

Courtney Lindberg then introduced our speakers, Mary Wood and Patsy Gillham, Directors of Plastic Pollution Texas. They spoke about stopping the pollution of our Texas Waterways, in particular the Houston Bayous. They described how fish, birds and turtles can choke on the debris. They explained and encouraged the passage of Texas Bottle Bill for 2011. Beverages covered are beer, malt, carbonate soft drink, mineral water, wine, coffee, teas, juices, and non-carbonated waters. The amount of the deposit is 10 cents on 24 ozs. and 15 cents on greater than 24 ozs. containers.  There would be reclamation stations at retail stores and redemption centers.  Eleven states already have a Bottle Bill.  State Representative Garnet Coleman and State Senator Gallegos are sponsors of the legislation in the Texas Legislature. Legislation is necessary to have a state coordinated plan and for the necessary start up funds. They encouraged everyone to contact elected officials and let them know they support  the Bill.  Concluding, they noted the potential additional revenue injected back into the Texas economy, the jobs gained in other states with a bottle bill, and the green house gases avoided by recycling.  More information is available on the Club's Environmental Home Page.

President Coney adjourned the meeting at 1 p.m. See you next week.

Space Center Rotary Club Endowment Foundation
Awards First Sponsorship

by Robert Wren

The very first recipient of the new Vocational Sponsorship Award, Mitchell Mardis from Clearview High School, was presented to the Club by Peter Wuenschel.  Mitch was accompanied by his uncle, Lynn McLaren, who works with at the Bayou Vista Police Department.  Mitch will enter the Fall Semester session at Alvin Junior College in pursuit of a goal of becoming a Police Officer.  Phil Sandlin will help mentor Mitch.  This program, unlike the singular academic scholarship awards currently given by our Club, is intended to support the recipient through a multi-semester path sufficient in length to enable readiness for gainful employment.  Vic Maria has made the Foundation aware for sometime  that an unfilled niche existed in our Club's generous recognition of and support given to our student population. This new Vocational Sponsorship Program fills that niche.  Your Club's Endowment Foundation intends to continue and to expand this new program benefiting students who choose a vocational career path in their studies.

"Let's Have A Great Rotary Year!"
"...the relationships we build are more important than the checks we give."  President Coney

The meeting opened with a traditional song (I've Got a Hammer), although some of us dipped when we should have soared.  We may need to try that one again to make sure we're all headed in the same direction.  Dick Gregg III led the pledge, followed by Dan Weber leading the Four Way Test.  Dick also welcomed visitors and guests, included Assistant District 5890 Governor Chris Schneider.  Mike Duckworth led off with the first announcement, sharing information about Patriot Golf Day, held at a variety of golf courses over Labor Day weekend to raise money for the Halls of Honor Foundation.  Roger Donnelly reminded members that September 9th is Rotary Night at the Astros.  A portion of the ticket proceeds will go to the PolioPlus Fund.  Anyone interested in tickets needs to contact Roger as soon as possible.  View a photo and read more about the game.

President David Coney expressed condolences to the McKinnie family due to the recent death of past President Jon McKinnie's son.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Shriners Hospital of Houston.  Condolence cards were passed around the room for member signature.

President Coney announced that the meeting is one of at least three Club Assemblies that will be held during the year. He discussed his vision of service through fun and fellowship, and his belief that the relationships we build are more important than the checks that we give.  We need to do more than just maintain the milestones we have already achieved; we need to continue to build on them.  We can do this through building on personal connections.  He recognized Marc Schneider for agreeing to take on the new chairmanship of the Interact Club committee and discussed the importance of promoting Rotary values in our youth

President Coney then introduced the rest of his officer team: President-Elect Mike Dennard, Secretary Marilyn Musial, Treasurer Sheryl Berg, and Sergeant at Arms Scott Rainey.  Directors and committees were then recognized. (Meet the Directors).  Director of Club Administration Kippy Caraway was first noting committee members Jerrold Dewease (web master), Kathy Dooley (reporter), John Lee and Bob Mitchell (photographers), John Branch (Programs) and Billy Smith (Constitution and Bylaws).  Public Relations Director Bill Lowes announced that he is in need of volunteers, and recognized Roger Donnelly and Mary Alice Cherry as two of his committee members.  Bill Geissler is the Director for Membership.  His committees include the Attendance, Classification, Recruitment, and Retention committees.  Membership is chaired by Bob Taggart and Classification is chaired by Scott Rainey.  Bill read a list of committee members and asked for additional volunteers.  Mike Duckworth is the Director of Fund raising, and has both the Shrimporee and Springoree Committees.  Additional volunteers are always welcome.  John Nugent is the Director for Community Services A, assisted by Dr. Greg Smith, Marc Schneider and Dr. Ted Cummings.  Phil Sandlin is the Director for Community Services B, which includes the Senior Citizen program, Health and Safety, and Scholarships.  Phil also coordinates the Excellence in Public Service Awards, which will recognize EMTs this year.  Travis Vermeer, Director of International Service A, oversees the Rotary Foundation and Space Center Rotary Club Endowment Foundation.  Travis discussed the purpose of the two different funds and solicited volunteers.  As Director of International Service B, Bob Taggart is responsible for Group Study Exchange, the International Youth Exchange Program, and the World Health Foundation committees.  Rae DeCastro is in charge of Vocational Service, which includes the Excellence in Education program, for which we partner with the Seabrook and League City Rotary Clubs and the Excellence in Law Enforcement committees.

President Coney noted that we have lots of people, and lots of activities.  He is working on ways to improve communication within the club, and wants to include a list of committee members and committee meeting dates on the web site.  Jerrold Dewease is available to assist anyone needing help with web site navigation.  President Coney asked if anyone saw a need for any new committee.  In addition to leveraging new ideas, he wants to net 5 new members this year.  There is still $9,000 unallocated in the annual budget for new projects.  He challenged the membership to come up with fresh ideas and to concentrate our efforts on things that make an impact with people.  A major goal for the club this year is donation of $12,500 to the Rotary Foundation, and a Polio Plus goal of $20 per member.

President-Elect/Shrimporee Chair Mike Dennard recognized Marilyn Musial as the Shrimporee Co-Chair and several of the committee chairs.  The team approach is being used for fund raising again this year, with membership divided into "tribes".  Scott Rainey needs weekly reports from each tribe Chieftain.  Courtney Lindberg is in charge of ticket sales this year.  Courtney, Scott, and Marilyn will receive funds from each tribe.  Dr. Greg Smith is in charge of the silent auction and will be recommending themes to each tribe.

Other committees include the Environmental Committee, created last year by Courtney Lindberg.  Club beneficiaries include the new International Oven Project, local Meals on Wheels, Hope Village, and a synergistic lab for Clear Creek Independent School District.  The Club supports 23 local projects and 6 international projects.  Questions were received from the floor, with many focusing on the Earlyact, Interact and Rotaract programs.  Members asked whether efforts would be made to start Interact Clubs at additional high schools in the district.

No meeting will be held next Monday due to the holiday.  A Shrimporee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday.  Anyone needing information on the Astros tickets should contact Roger Donnelly.  Tickets will also be given to the Interact and  Youth Exchange students.  The  meeting adjourned  at 1:00p.m.

Thanks from McKinnie Family
Jon R. McKinnie

Kay & I want to thank each of you for your support during the sad loss of our son, Ty (48), who passed away on 25th of Aug, my birthday.  Ty had been working in OR, got where he couldn't breathe well, drove home on Aug 15th. Went to Dr next day, was in intensive care 9 days where he succumbed from congestive heart failure.  Kay & I were with Ty until the end. Ty asked to be cremated and his ashes scattered in some of his favorite places.

Ty loved to hunt and fish, never liked a crowd, so we have following his wishes with small gatherings of family & friends to scatter his ashes in a beautiful stream on his property in Arkansas (Aug 29), Toledo Bend Lake where he made many fishing trips (Sep 19) and my LA homestead which has been in family for 179 years (Oct 10).

Thanks again for your prayers and support for my family as we struggle through this hard time.  Ty is probably hunting in Heaven right now and is mad because God won't let him shot anything there.  HA

May God bless Ty, our family and each of you.
Jon & Kay McKinnie
Past President 2009-10

September 13, 2010 Club Meeting Review
Reporter Kathy Dooley
Photographer John Lee

Last week’s meeting began with a most appropriate song, since Monday Rotary meetings are definitely one of my “Favorite Things”.  What a great way to start the week!  Dennis Dillon led the prayer, Vince Lipovsky led the Four Way Test, and Johnny White introduced visitors, including John Eiche, our District Representative to the Rotary International Council on Legislation.  Roger Donnelly shared a Red Skelton interpretation of the Pledge of Allegiance, then announced that Space Center Rotary was well represented at the Astros Game, with 44 people in attendance.

Scott Rainey announced that Shrimporee funding is on track, but additional sponsors are needed.  So far cash sponsorships in the amount of $33,500 have been collected.  Scott recognized Rena Dietrich as a $2500 level sponsor.  Members should remember to report their collection efforts to their Tribal Chiefs, and Chiefs are to provide Scott with their updates each Sunday.  Chiefs should also pick up Shrimporee tickets today.  Dr. Greg Smith gave an update on Silent Auction Committee efforts.  The Apache group has chosen the chocolate theme for their basket donations.  Creek has a golf package and Shawnee an A&M Tailgate package.  Tribes have until next Monday to let him know their basket theme selection.  After Monday, he will assign basket themes.

President Coney’s “Who Am I” exercise focused on engineer Dennis Dillon. President Coney shared a family story sure to get him in trouble at home, extending the message that we need to be perceptive to what is happening with the people around us.  Past President Jon McKinnie expressed his thanks for the thoughts and words of condolences from the membership after the recent loss of his son.  Jon announced that Alan Wylie is retiring after 43 years in the space industry.  His retirement party will be October 14.  See either Jon or Geoff Atwater for information.

Jon introduced today's speaker, John Eiche.  Mr. Eiche is a past District 5890 Governor, District Leadership Trainer for the Gulf Coast Leadership Institute, a member of the Richmond Rotary, and our District Representative to the Rotary International (RI) Council on Legislation.  Mr. Eiche’s first task was the induction of new member John Swartwout, retired administrator for the Shriners Hospital in Galveston, Texas.  Mr. Swartwout has been a Rotarian for over 20 years.

The Rotary Council on Legislation was initially created in 1934 as an advisory group to analyze proposals before they were voted on at convention.  Through the years the Council has evolved to become the parliamentary body for Rotary.  The Council meets in Chicago (close to Rotary headquarters).  Every district is invited to send a representative, each of whom serve a three year term.  The Council met in April of this year.  There are 531 districts worldwide.  527 sent representatives to the meeting.  Mr. Eiche displayed a 2” binder full of materials covering the 2010 proposed legislation that was sent to each representative.   In addition to the district representatives, the following non-voting members attend:  The Chair, Vice Chair, Parliamentarian, and the RI Constitution and Bylaws Committee members, 3 members at large, the President, President-Elect, Board members, Trustees of the Rotary Foundation, and the RI General Secretary.

There are 2 types of proposed legislation:  resolutions and enactments.  An enactment amends the Constitution/Bylaws/Standing Rotary Constitution for all chapters.  A resolution is a request by Council that the Rotary Boards take a position or action regarding a specific issue.  Voting at Council meetings is conducted electronically.  At the April session, the Council considered 128 enactments and 92 resolutions.  47 enactments and 19 resolutions were adopted.

Enactments of note:
10-11  Created office of Immediate Past President
10-23  Changed Rule of 85 in calculation of attendance
10-40  No discrimination in membership based on sexual orientation
10-87  Added New Generations of Service as the 5th avenue of service

Resolutions of Note:
10-1    Encourages creation of Training and Leadership Committee
10-94  Consider recognizing Early Act Clubs as official Rotary Organizations
10-102 Recognize the Inner Wheel (Rotary Sponsors) as valuable working partners of Rotary

The new enactments were effective July 1.  Council meetings generally run 7 am – 7 pm, plus outside reading.  Mr. Eiche shared that the meetings are draining but overall it is a great experience.  New delegates will be selected next April.  Until then, if we have a request for legislation, please let him know.

President Coney welcomed new member John Swartwout.  John Branch is his sponsor and Gary Johnson will serve as mentor.  There is a Space Center Rotary Club Endowment Foundation meeting tomorrow, but no Shrimporee planning meeting this week.   The meeting was adjourned.

District 5890 Governor Sunny Sharma and wife Rashmi
Visits Rotary Club of Space Center Today

District 5890 Governor Sunny Sharma and his wife Rashmi will visit  us today.  We are not sure what Governor Sharma will focus on, but expect some insight on  the Rotary International  theme of “Building Communities, Bridging Continents” as well as his theme of “Building the Family of Rotary”.  We will report next week about their visit.  However, for now, you can read about him in his  biographical sketch.

The McKinnie's have expressed their appreciation for the prayers, thoughts, and words of comfort regarding their son, Ty in a card to the Club members.  Also read the letter from the Shriners Hospital for Children noting the donation given by the Club in memory of their son and the McKinnie's thank you card.

President Coney reported that our club sponsored a whole cabin of special needs kids at Camp Be An Angel.  We also gave $1000 to Centro Pastoral Social Cristo Obrero, AKA as the women's center of Ezequiel Montes in Mexico for monitors to go with CPUs that were donated for their vocational program, and presented the largest check ever written by Space Center Rotary to sponsor a synergistic lab at one of the Clear Creek Independent School District schools.  President Coney also expressed the need for urgent consideration of our support for the Shrimporee (be sure to ask him about urgency in his mother in laws adventures on the floor with the dog).  Shrimporee is only three weeks away and we have not reached our normal financial support levels.  Ticket money and auction items need to be turned in as soon as possible.  Raffle ticket sales begin next week, and we have a beautiful piece of jewelry for the raffle.

John Branch introduced
Randy Stone, President and Chief Operating Officer of Cimarron Software Service and a 37 year NASA veteran.  Randy shared many behind the scenes stories from the space program, and was such an entertaining speaker that you could hear the disappointment in the room when his time was up.  President Coney presented Mr. Stone with a token of appreciation and announced that there is a Shrimporee meeting tomorrow at 5:30 at the JSC Credit Union.  The meeting adjourned.

Disposal of Unused Medications
by Courtney Lindberg
Chair, Environmental Committee

A very important issue was brought to my attention by a fellow Rotarian recently; “How do I properly dispose of unused medications?” This is a very good question.  The following article (from my favorite recycling web site www.earth911.com) outlines how to handle not only expired or unused medications, but many other pharmaceutical items in an environmentally friendly and safe way.  You can visit the Club's environmental web site which has this article and much more environmental type information by going to the Club web site http://www.spacecenterrotary.org, look to the left side of the page under Club Links and click on Environmental Information.  You do not have to log in to do this.  However if you want to go directly to the environmental web site, click on http://www.spacecenterrotary.info/Environment.htm

and to have fun doing these things"... District Governor Sunny Sharma

The meeting had a great start with Debbie McBride leading in song, Jim Saxe the pledge of allegiance to the U. S. Flag, Jon McKinnie the Four-Way Test, Jack Lister the invocation, and Hilmar Zeissig the introduction of guest and visiting Rotarians.  Guests included Jim Teeter, Youth Exchange Officer for District 5930 and a member of the Harlingen Rotary Club, Assistant District 5890 Governor (ADG) Chris Schneider, and Past District 589 Governor Paul Jury.

Announcements included the following: Women of Rotary will meet October 13 at Tommy’s; Roger Donnelly announced that the annual Christmas party will be held December 15th at Bay Oaks Country Club; and cards to let Al Brady and is wife Norma know that his friends are thinking of him would be appreciated.

Mike Dennard, Shrimporee chair, updated members concerning the Shrimporee scheduled for October 16th.  Anyone willing to help who does not have an assignment yet was asked to contact him.  Mike introduced his Shrimporee team:  Co-Chair Marilyn Musial, Scott Rainey (in charge of sponsors), Alice May-Sexton (in charge of raffle tickets), Courtney Lindbergh (in charge of meal tickets), Dr. Greg Smith (in charge of silent auction), and Alan Wylie (in charge of live auction).  He asked that everyone turn in ticket/raffle money as soon as possible to Courtney, Marilyn, or Scott.  A beautiful 18 kt. gold necklace valued at $2500 has been donated for the raffle prize by Slade Lewis of Lewis Jewelers.  Dr. Smith recognized those teams who have turned in basket themes and announced theme assignments for the remaining teams.  Scott Rainey reported that the Shrimporee is supported by $35,000 in sponsor donations, down from last year by about $15,000.  Last minute sponsors will still be accepted, he noted.  Alan Wylie expressed appreciation to the folks that regularly donate items for the auctions.  Mike Dennard announced that 8 volunteers are needed to throw in $50 each for beer purchases.

ADG Chris Schneider introduced District Governor Sunny Sharma and First Lady Rashmi Sharma.  Governor Sharma recognized Suzie Howe for the excellent District Foundation Seminar held on Saturday, and acknowledged Travis Vermeer as the Foundation Representative.

Governor Sharma discussed the qualities of Rotary that will prevent the organization from becoming irrelevant as time passes.  These include high ethical standards, the motto “Service Above Self”, the Rotary Foundation and its forward thinking goals, and efforts toward polio eradication.  His vision for Rotary is that of a service oriented, dynamic, action oriented club whose contributions improve lives.  He wants each club to promote diversity, provide and develop leadership, and to have fun doing these things.  He asked everyone to share with their family, friends, neighbors, and business associates their involvement in Rotary.  Included in his “Building Communities, Building Continents” list of goals is an interest in strengthening our Rotary family bonds.  He has issued a challenge to create a District wide membership directory that will help Rotary members promote each other, mentor each other's kids, and ensure that you can choose to do business with others who have the same high ideals and standards.  He expressed thanks to ADG Chris Schneider and recognized other team members for their support of his administration.  Governor Sharma reminded the membership of the Be A Friend Dinner set for October 22nd to recognize nongovernmental partners of Rotary.  The event is also a fundraiser with 1/3 of the table costs going to the Rotary Foundation, 1/3 to the respective Club, and 1/3 to be split among organizations serving in the six focus areas.

Governor Sharma announced the District 5890 Governor Citation for Outstanding Service and Dedication to Space Center Rotary and recognized the following Space Center members with the award:  President David Coney, Debbie McBride, Roger Donnelly, Kathy Dooley, Bill Geissler, Past President Jon McKinnie, Past District 5890 Governor Suzie Howe, and Past District 589 Governor Floyd Boze.

President Coney announced that a donation of $1000 had been made to the Floyd Boze Fellow Foundation fund in Governor Sharma’s name, and presented Governor Sharma with a Floyd Boze Fellowship and medallion.  A bouquet of flowers was presented to First Lady Rashmi with appreciation expressed for all she does to support Rotary and her husband.  President Coney asked the membership to leave with a new enthusiasm to embrace the family of Rotary and exhorted members to go out and do good works.  The meeting was adjourned.

Our Grant Money At Work

Karmouz Inauguration

We have another opportunity to see the workings of the Rotary grant process and the good work collective giving does.  As part of the process there must be a sponsoring Rotary club for the project to be funded; for this project it is the Rotary Club of Alexandria Cosmopolitan, Egypt.  Last year our Club gave $2,500 as our share of a grant for a Girls’ Shelter in Alexandria, Egypt.  Recently an email was received from the Rotary Club of Alexandria Cosmopolitan regarding the status of the shelter and as the writer of the email said “a dream has come true!!  Read  the entire email.  Also the pictures that were sent with the email can be viewed in a photo-gallery; however, the pictures were not captioned.

Thoughts About The Human Space Program

“I have been truly disheartened and concerned about how the president's plans for the nation's manned space program will affect JSC’s outstanding technical, engineering and management teams,..." Jack Lister

Our Club has many pioneers in NASA's human space program.  One member, who played an instrumental role in the program, was Jack Lister with a 22 year career at NASA starting in 1961.  His position as Johnson Space Center Human Resources Director afforded him the opportunity and privilege to be involved with many of the NASA personnel.  Jack had a very insightful article about the human space program in last Thursday's edition of The Bay Area Citizen.  You can read the article

<<< 37th SHRIMPOREE NEXT SATURDAY >>>

"Be sure to tell your friends about Shrimporee, and sell tickets!"...Big Shrimp

The meeting had a big Texas kickoff with Deep in the Heart of Texas lead by Debbie McBride, with Mike Hernandez the pledge of allegiance to the U. S. Flag, Suzi Howe the Four-Way Test, President Coney the invocation, and Cindy Harreld the introduction of guest and visiting Rotarians.  President David Coney presented the following attendance awards:

  • 1 year perfect attendance to Mike Dennard
  • 3 years perfect attendance to Jon McKinnie
  • 13 years perfect attendance to Bill Lowes
  • 30 years perfect attendance to Al Ligrani

President Coney reminded the membership that meetings can be made up with other clubs on line.  Assistant District 5890 Governor Chris Schneider presented an award for Outstanding Service and Dedication on behalf of District 5890 Governor Sunny Sharma to Floyd Boze

Mike Hernandez introduced Randy Hornig representing the Sam Houston Area Council of Boy Scouts.  The Council is planning for 2011 and is recruiting volunteers to help with events and fund raising.  Volunteer sign up cards are on each table.  President Coney demonstrated accessing the club web site, pointed out the tremendous amount of information available on the site, and recognized Jerrold Dewease for the many hours he has invested in building the data base.  He asked everyone to spend some time tinkering with the web site.  Any one needing help in accessing the site can see Jerrold before or after Rotary meetings.  There is no meeting next week, however, members are reminded that the Board has approved the Bylaw revisions and we will be voting on those this month.  They are posted on the web site.

Mike “Big Chief Shrimp” Dennard discussed plans for the upcoming Shrimporee.  He noted that Shrimporee is the Club’s major fundraiser, and also begins the process each year of serving those who need our help.  Space Center Rotary supports 25 domestic and 13 international projects, and the bulk of the funding is provided by Shrimporee and Springoree.  Dr. Greg Smith announced that he has received 9 of the 18 baskets for the silent auction.  Courtney Lindbergh is collecting ticket sale money.  Any unsold tickets need to be returned to her.  Only 46 people have paid to date.  Funds from ticket sales are what pay for the food for Shrimporee, so your ticket money needs to be turned in as soon as possible.  Alice May-Sexton displayed the David Yurman necklace donated by Lewis Jewelers for the raffle.  The necklace is valued at $2500.  Raffle tickets are $10 each or 6 for $50.  Scott Rainey reported that sponsors are up to $40,500.  He recognized Gene Tromblee as a $5000 donor and Mike Cornett for his double sponsorship through Storage Corral and Texas Citizens Bank.  The Big Chief Shrimp (minus his shrimp head) reminded everyone that the last two planning meetings are tomorrow and next Tuesday, and asked that everyone please take care of their pledges as soon as possible.  Be sure to tell your friends about Shrimporee, and sell tickets!

Suzi Howe asked for a donation for a student in need of a computer monitor.  Micki Czarnik announced that the Ladies of Rotary will meet for lunch on October 13th at Tommy’s Restaurant on Bay Area.  Desserts are needed for the Shrimporee sweet booth.  Jack Lister announced that they are still looking for 2 more host families for a student from Slovakia.  The Clear Creek High School attendance zone is preferred.  The meeting adjourned with a reminder that there is no meeting next week due to the Columbus Day holiday.

      Words From The President
" I would love for us to focus on improving our attendance, building better frienships with our Rotarian friends and actively seek ways to become the best Rotary Club we can be." .... President Coney

As the saying goes, "time flies when you are having fun".  Almost 1/3 of the Rotary year is already over and I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to serve as the president of Space Center Rotary Club. As I reflect over the the work we have done in the first trimester of this year, I am so proud of what we have accomplished and have a renewed vigor to do even better in the next two.  We have already given over $30,000 to help our community and our world which is what many clubs do in the whole year. Our club gave $18,000 to put a Career Exploration Technology Lab in Bayside Intermediate School which provides students some hands on virtual reality experience in 16 different careers. We sponsored a $1,200 cabin for Camp Be An Angel that allows for special needs children to do things they never thought possible. We donated $1,000 to put 10 computer monitors in the Women's Center in Ezequiel Montez, Queretaro Mexico, We gave $2,000 to an Afghan School Grant and $2,000 to Volunteer Houston for the Commanders Program in our community that hosts three one week long camps for students to learn and practice leadership skills and volunteering.

The Clear Lake Interact Club is booming with 80 active members. They recently had an Interact float for the homecoming parade and used part of their budget to buy T-Shirts for their members.  Our three youth exchange students are having a great time and have enjoyed many Rotary events and are doing our club proud.  Gene Tromblee gave his $5,000 sponsorship directly to two of our beneficiaries by a $3,000 gift to Stillwater Sports Camp, who does a wonderful Christian sports camp for kids who could not afford to go to camp; and $2,000 to Interfaith Caring Ministries. Our club is also participating  in a Rotary International Grant by giving $2,500 to a water project in Santo Domingo Honduras and  in a District Simplified Grant by giving $2,000 to the Children of The Dump in Nicaragua.  As you can see, we have been busy so far this year and I am so proud of all of the people who do so much for our club.

In addition to supporting all of these beneficiaries, we have also planned and executed our Shrimporee!  The weather was perfect, the food was awesome, and whatever money we raised will be put to good use.  I know Mike Dennard is proud of all of the hard work that our members and volunteers put in to make this event a success. I have asked Jerrold Dewease to also share his thoughts on the event.

We have got momentum going and  we should continue to build upon that momentum to keep going strong. I would love for us to focus on improving our attendance, building better frienships with our Rotarian friends and actively seek ways to become the best Rotary Club we can be.  The Shrimporee is such a great fellowship builder.

I look forward to seeing each and every one of you on Monday. We are going to have a good program by our very own Jack Bacon as well as some very special guests from Hope Village,  honorary member Dr. Fustok will be visiting along with past president Donnie Johnson, Rotary year 1997-98.

      Yours in Rotary,
      David Coney

      Reflections on Shrimporee 37
       by Jerrold Dewease

Early Sunday morning I walked through Landolt Pavilion and surrounding park area noticing how clean and quite it was with all the 600 park chairs stacked and stored.  It was the beginning of a beautiful day, much like the two days before.  The rented tent, 80 rented tables nearly stacked behind the pavilion, and the ice trailer were about all that remained from the two days before.  Along the fence in the back was a large pile of black trash bags with 8 clear bags full of aluminum cans and plastic bottles next to them.  A couple of things came to mind, one was what a herculean job the student volunteers and scouts did keeping the bags picked up and moved out; and secondly, if it were not for Courtney Lindberg’s continued efforts, these reclyable items would not be here.

I thought how one day makes a difference?  This time yesterday there were 1000 pounds of frozen shrimp, 350 pounds of sausage, about 50 gallons of beans, cases of soft drinks and bottled water, 2000 ears of frozen corn, wieners; and associated cooking and serving supplies such as aluminum pans, carry out containers, paper plates, aprons, towels, crab boil, sauces, bread and buns, cutlery kits, charcoal, paper plates, and chips lining the kitchen walls.  The shrimp cooker, cooling table, propane tanks, utensils, trays and other associated items were brought and unloaded Friday afternoon, setup and ready to go.  The ice trailer ordered by Vic Maria also came Friday with 100 forty pound sacks of ice.

Yesterday at this time, Jean Walker was lighting the charcoal for the two warming grills, Bill Lowes was setting up the two meat slicing machines, and Bill Taylor making sure the right thing was in the right place at the right time.  The burners were being lit for the shrimp cooker under the auspices of Geoff Atwater and Bob Taggart who did a tremendous job of cooking during Bill Geissler’s absence.  Soon leaders from the CCISD and Boy Scouts arrived with dozens of volunteers.  In about two hours they have transformed the pavilion into our normal Shrimporee arrangement, with 70 tables and 400 chairs set up for the eating area, ten tables for the silent auction and 200 chairs for the live auction guests.  The 80 rented tables had been placed and were being covered with plastic readying them for the food preparation and sales.  The big cooker and smoker rig with 1000 pounds of cooked, but frozen, brisket soon arrived and was placed by the kitchen.  Rotarians, adult volunteers, student volunteers, Interactors, and Rotaractors
      continued to come in

Trucks and SUV’s began to arrive filled with auction items.  Jerry Smith and Alan Wylie strategically placed the live auction items in the exact place on and in front of the pavilion stage.  Rae DeCastro set up the silent auction tables and made sure all the arrangements and baskets were just right.  Signs were going up everywhere with the help of Dick Meyer, Dennis Paul, and volunteers.  The Women of Rotary were bringing all kinds of sweet goodies and setting up the cotton candy and popcorn machines under the guidance of Micki Czarnik.  Chief Deputy Phil Sandlin and his people begin to arrive to establish security for the area.  Soon the beer kegs were located at the pavilion, kitchen, and shrimp boil area.  John Branch took over the beer sales this year.  Gary Johnson set up his wine sales table between the beer and the sweet table.  Bottled water and soft drinks were being iced down getting ready for Rafael Lugo to start the sales; corn being cooked in a special recipe by Billy Smith; and hot dogs being readied to serve by Olive Murphy and Kathy Dooley.  Three inflatables, a jumper, slide, and obstacle course, arrived for the children’s activities and were located on the grassy area behind the pavilion under the watchful eyes of Marc Schneider.  The shaved ice trailer arrived and was placed adjacent to the sweet tables.

At 10:30 the band began to play as food preparations began to come together at Marilyn Musial's serving lines being readied for the eleven o’clock hour.  Roger Donnelly set up the raffle sales table and Alice May-Sexton started the raffle sales.  Owen Morris and Art Wood set up the bidders' and VIP's registration table.  At eleven guests began to arrive and the 37th Shrimporee officially began.  At noon Greg Smith kicked off the silent auction with notice that the first table was closing.  Then at 1 o’clock Scott Rainey started the live auction recognizing the two auctioneers, Judge Louie Ditta and Commissioner Steve Phelps.  The live action continued until about 4 o’clock with a brief pause to draw for the raffle prize.  Jessica McIntosh was the winner of the beautiful necklace from Lewis Jewelers.  About 90 live auction items and about 25 silent auction items were auctioned off.  There were several political visitors who were escorted by Kippy Caraway and Sheryl Berg.  Mike Duckworth visited all the sales tables and closed out the sales with each one.  Photos were taken all throughout the Shrimporee by Bob Mitchell, John Lee, Mary A. Cherry, and Peter Cronk (Pam Culpepper).  Shrimporee Chair, Mike Dennard, was all over the place shoring up areas in need and Ambassador of Good Will Coney was mixing with the guests and workers.

About 4 o’clock it was all over but the cleanup.  The volunteers had the area restored to the park arrangement, kitchen and serving utensils cleaned, rented tables gathered and stacked for return, and the area general cleaned up by 5.  Excess food was given to Bay Area Turning Point.

Now a day later, the sound of music; the hum of guests, their family and friends laughing and talking; the auctioneer calling for bids; and the hawkers recognizing a bid are all silent; the laughter of children quiet and their running around with bright colored hair and their faces painted gone; and Scott Rainey emceeing done for another year.

But memories live on; there were things about this Shrimporee that I will remember.  The food was absolutely delicious, thanks to Brian Ellis, wife Alice, and all involved in cooking and preparations; the volunteers were outstanding, thanks to Nancy Mallini and Art Oswald and all the support from the CCISD and Boy Scouts; and I saw old friends Murray Epstein, Dennis Dillon, and Earl and Terrilee Maudlin.  There was also a rare moment when the three of our Club members who had been district governors, Floyd Boze, Billy Weseman (wife Ann), and Suzi Howe (husband Bill) were together and Mary Alys took a picture.  I enjoyed the visit with District 5890 Governor Sunny and wife Rashmi Sharma as well as Assistant District 5890 Governor Chris Schneider.  It was good to see Harris County Precinct 8 Constable Bill Bailey.  Although not said I suspect he was checking on his 55 gallon tea keg.  The Constable loaned the use of the keg, and furnished the tea, cups and sweetener.

But perhaps most rewarding was that I saw folks just fellowshipping.  For one, the kitchen work was essentially completed by 1 pm, but folks stayed on, gathered together, and just talked for a while before the final cleanup.  Hopefully our club members got to know the new members better and the new members got to know the older members better.  Also saw the third generation of our members there, guess they were being acclimated early to Rotary.  Perhaps the most rewarding were the comments I received from one to the Scout troops leader.  I was thanking them for their support and they said we will be back next year.  We appreciate what you are doing demonstrating what community service is all about for the young folks.  Also we like the scouts to be around these people, they are good examples for them.  And what about the wonderful student volunteers, they were hard working, well behaved, and courteous, and did not hesitate to do what was asked of them.  What a great bunch of young women and men.  And I can’t say enough about the faithful adult volunteers who come year after year.  Just thanks.  And thanks to our faithful members who work and make the Shrimporee what it is.  And in closing I want to express my appreciation for those of you who are getting up in age and still visit and some even work the Shrimporee.  I know it is difficult to come, but you do and you are always an encouragement to the rest of us when we see you at the Shrimporee and at the Club meetings.

Well Rotarians, it was a great day.  Mark on your calendars October 15, 2011, the date for Shrimporee 38.  Marilyn is beginning to think about it already.  However for now she is compiling the financial data on Shrimporee 37.

President David Coney recognized Billy Smith for his extensive work in updating the Club Bylaws.  The revised bylaws have been emailed to the membership twice and have been posted at the last 2 meetings.  President Coney called for a vote on the proposed revised Bylaws.  Marilyn Musial verified that a quorum was present.  A motion was made to adopt the proposed bylaws, was seconded and passed.  President Coney briefly discussed the difference between the bylaws and the constitution, and the meeting was adjourned.

…"we are his Rotary family"... Jean Walker

The meeting opened with Debby McBride leading the members and guests in song; Carlos Villagomez the invocation; Lamar Bowles; the pledge; and Slade Lewis the Four Way Test.  Bill Lowes introduced visitors and guests, including Hope Village guests.  President Coney noted that they would be visiting the first Club meeting of each month.

Jean Walker commented on how much she enjoyed the last social event and how she enjoys having the time to talk to the members at the socials since we just get down to business on Monday's.  She got a chance to sit next to Gene Tromblee at one, and that is where she learned more about him.  At his service people kept asking the group of Rotarians that she was with, how they knew Gene?  They would simply say "we are his Rotary family".  She encouraged the membership to look at their calendars and do their best to attend the social events.  Roger Donnelly said that the next social will be at the 888 Bistro restaurant November 17th.  It was one of Gene Tromblee’s favorite spots and Roger was going to see if Gene’s wife Donna could attend.

Stavan Vora announced a Rotaract district event to be held on November 12th and that the proceeds will go to support projects in Peru and Argentina.  Tickets can be purchased from Suzi Howe, Marilyn Musial, or Stavan for $40 each.  Jerry Smith successully auctioned off three items from the Shrimporee.  Philip Harris, center, received his Red Badge from Past District Governor Suzi Howe on his right and mentor Slade Lewis.

Dr. Healther Green Wooten, author of the book, The Polio Years in Texa: Battling a Terrifying Unknown, was the guest program speaker.  She gave a brief overview of her book focusing on the terrifying and debilitating effects of polio in Texas.  Her research revealed that Texas was one of the hardest hit in terms of polio epidemics: Galveston County in 1943, 1945, and 1952; and Houston and Harris County hardest hit of all with epidemics every other year.

Any individual who remembers the polio years remembers the fear that disease instilled.  Although it was widely known that polio was caused by a virus, nobody knew for sure how it was contracted.  We know now that it is a hand to mouth disease.  It multiplies in the intestinal tract and then is shed.  Paralysis occurs when the virus breaks through the intestinal wall, enters the bloodstream and then attacks the central nervous system.  This was the information gathered in order to create the Salk and Sabin vaccines.  However years before these, there was much uncertainty.  All they knew was that it was highly contagious, struck without warning, and had a cruel preference for children and young adults.  Parents were terrified.  People commonly remember the closing of Sunday schools, swimming pools, theaters and summer camps in Texas City.

In response to the rapidly growing number of polio cases in Texas, Dallas Orthopedic Surgeon and Rotarian, William Beall Carrell and the Scottish Rite Masons founded the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children in 1923.  It became the first hospital in Texas devoted entirely to rehabilitation of the disabled.  Polio patients comprised 80 per cent of caseload during polio years.

As the polio years progressed, an increasing numbers of patients were becoming victims of bulbar (which paralyzed diaphragm and muscles used for breathing) or bulbar spinal polio (virus paralyzed both limbs and diaphragm).  Iron lung patients required aggressive, round-the-clock care but most hospitals did not have the funding, equipment, or the staff to handle this situation.

In 1950, the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis began to establish respiratory centers throughout the country to address this issue.  The highly aggressive, concentrated care iron lung patients received at these centers became the forerunner of our modern intensive care units.  Mortality rate plummeted.  There were fourteen centers established throughout the country.  Houston, with its record for epidemics became home of the first center of this kind. Southwestern Poliomyelitis Respirator Center, one of thelargestaffiliated with Baylor College of Medicine and Jefferson Davis Hospital.

Texas played a major role in the search for a vaccine including Houston being the chosen location for the 1952 gamma globulin field trials.  Schoolchildren from Ten Texas Counties were chosen to participate in the Salk Vaccine Field Trial known as Operation Polio.  Rotary played a significant part in the massive vaccine campaigns of 1955 and 1962.  For almost a century, Rotary has championed the polio cause. Stayed in the fight long after organizations have adopted other causes, have kept
going, for that I salute you and thank you very much.

The December 6th Rotary meeting was held at the University of Houston Clear Lake (UHCL).  Carl Stockton, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, welcomed members to the campus.  He announced that enrollment at UHCL is at an all time high this semester, and the University is moving forward with a request for approval to add Freshman and Sophomore level classes to the program.  The decision should be finalized by the end of the legislative session in June.  An implementation timeline is still to be determined.   The budget is still a major issue as the state has cut funding by 41%.

Debby McBride led the singing, Carolos Villagomez led the prayer, and Scott Rainey led the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. Flag.  Marilyn Musial led the Four Way Test, and Jerry Smith introduced visitors and guests.  Roger Donnelly reminded members that the Christmas fellowship will be December 15th.  Friday is the deadline to RSVP.  District 5890 Governor Sunny Sharma and Assistant District Governor Chris Schneider will also be attending.  Members passed the hat collecting funds to support the local family that lost three children to a fire on Veterans Day.  Four hundred dollars were collected for the family.  Phillip Harris presented the banner he received for the club when he attended a meeting of the Denver Colorado Sky High Rotary Club.  President Coney announced that the next golf outing will be December 8th at Bay Forest in LaPorte.  RSVP to Dick Hergert.  President Coney and Alan Wyle announced that 40 students had been interviewed for the Youth Exchange program and recognized those Rotarians who helped with the interview process.  Four students were accepted from our club.

      John Branch introduced Rear Admiral
Joel Sipes, (U.S. Coast Guard, Ret).  Admiral Sipes reviewed the multi mission services provided by the U.S. Coast Guard.  He discussed experiences in oil spill administration and compared the handling of the Exxon Valdez and the British Petroleum (BP) Deepwater spill.  He noted that the BP spill is the largest spill that has ever occurred in American waters, and is the 2nd largest international spill, falling in line behind the deliberate crude oil release by the opposition during the Gulf War.  The offshore platform explosion at the Bay of Campeche is 3rd, followed by the Exxon Valdez spill.  He noted that the British frequently use dispersants in dealing with spills, while the United States does not due to toxicity.  He stated that the level of public outrage was higher for the Exxon Valdez spill and that since 1990, all tankers arriving in the United States have to be double hulled.  Admiral Sipes discussed lessons learned from Exxon Valdez concerning organization and administration of oil spill cleanup.  Similar disaster plans now include a unified command structure that allows assets to be mobilized more efficiently.  He noted that recent budget cuts may take the Coast Guard out of involvement with oil spill recovery and there is potential for loss of significant knowledge and experience.  He also noted that moving the Coast Guard under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security changed the traditional service focus.  Admiral Sipes answered questions, was thanked for his presentation by President David Coney, and the meeting was adjourned by President Coney.

John Branch introduced Lieutenant David Rainwater of the Texas Rangers.  Lieutenant Rainwater gave a brief overview of the history of the Rangers, highlighting roles played in the war with Mexico, the Civil War, and in the apprehension of Bonnie and Clyde.  Requirements for service as a Ranger include at least 8 years in the highway patrol before application.  A very limited number of applicants are accepted.  There are 140 Rangers today (7 companies) stationed all over the state, primarily in rural areas.  Lt. Rainwater noted that up until the 1960s, a Ranger was required to provide his own horse as part of his service.  He discussed the role of the Ranger that works with the Task Force on Public Corruption and noted that the size of the Ranger force is determined by the legislature.  A brief question and answer session followed.  President Coney expressed appreciation for his presentation, and adjourned the meeting.

The Rotary Christmas Party was another wonderful social event for the club.  It was held at Bay Oaks Country Club and Roger Donnelly did a fantastic job putting the event together for the 3rd year in a row.  Over 80 people were in attendance with several special guests.  District 5890 Governor Sunny Sharma and his wife Rashmi drove in for the occasion as well as our club's Assistant Governor Chris Schneider.

It was made public knowledge at the Christmas Party that Rodolfo Gonzalez got engaged last week and plans to be married within the year.  Rumor has it that he hired a marriachi band and truly had a first class proposal.  I know I speak for the entire Club when I say that we are so happy for you Rodolfo!  Also in attendance were our three youth exchange students.  I know they are all having a wonderful year and enjoyed sharing some holiday cheer with the Rotarians.  The evening would not have been complete without some Christmas Carols; we all enjoyed singing Jingle Bells as well as White Christmas led by our finest singing Rotarians and their spouses.  We have much to be thankful for and it was a pleasure celebrating with all who attended the Rotary Christmas Party.

Thanks Debby for Three Years of Great Singing
and being with us seven  years
      by Kathy Dooley

      View photos of Debby

The members of the Rotary Club of Space Center extend our best wishes to outgoing song leader extraordinaire,  Debby McBride.  Debby has been a member for seven years, and has led the singing for three years.  Those of us who didn’t get a chance to know Debby better have definitely missed a treat.

Debby is originally a California native and moved to Texas with her parents (Mom is Emyre Robinson of Barrios Technology) when she was in high school.  Debby graduated from Clear Creek High School, then made her way back to California and earned a BA in Spanish from UCLA.  She studied music at Cal State Fullerton, performing with the Roger Wagner Chorale.  Her career background also includes an apprenticeship as a piano tuner, co- owner of a karate studio (she is a 2nd degree black belt!) and word processing back when desk top computers were still a novelty.  She returned to Texas in 1990 and received a Masters in Accounting from the University of Houston Clear Lake.  After working as a CPA and in tax accounting for six years, Debby  ventured into real estate investing.  Dreamscape Realty Investments has kept her busy with both rental and fix it/flip it properties.  Debby is also a certified scuba dive master and dedicated volunteer for the Humane Society.

Debby, her life partner of 24 years, and their 6 dogs and 6 cats (all rescue animals) will be moving to Cozumel the end of December.  Their new home is 2500 square feet on a double lot with an 8 foot tall wall around it that will help keep the menagerie from running wild on the island.  Debby is already actively involved with the Cozumel equivalent of the Humane Society, assisting them in obtaining 501(c)(3) status for their fundraising arm.

      Our Presidents

We are now in the 47th year of the club’s history with 46 persons serving as presidents.  Three of our members have also been District 589 (5890) Governors.  As club historian, I have the privilege of “getting to know” the Presidents either by interview or by artifacts from their tenure.  I have come to realize that each, with her or his unique education, experience, and leadership characteristics, was a successful leader and each help shape our Club into one of the most admired and respected clubs in Rotary today.  Under their leadership our Club members have generated and given back to the local and international communities over $1,400,000 since 1964 not to mention the time freely given to mentoring; professional seminars; fix up, paint up, and clean up community projects; visiting and helping senior citizens and people who are physical handicapped and/or mentally retarded; clean water projects and orphanages; giving life back to severely burned children and eye sight to the blind.

We are fortunate to have pictures of each of our presidents and district governors, so let’s visit each one of these outstanding Rotarians in  a  photo  review.   Further, most of the President’s Rotary year history are complete and can be viewed by clicking on   Presidents  and looking to the upper right corner of the page and select the year you would like to visit.

      Our Service Heritage

Let’s go back 47 years to better understand the “Service Above Self” passion which drove our founding members to lay the foundation of service for our Club.

From the 1964-65 history file: The community service program of the club began almost immediately as the Space Center Rotary Club began work to establish a public library (The Theodore C. Freeman Memorial Library, in honor of the deceased astronaut), in the Clear Lake area.  Citizens of the area along with the Club organized the library and established temporary quarters in the Clear Lake City Recreation Center in January 1965.  Two thousand volumes were donated by residents to help get the library started.  The operation was entirely voluntary, from staffing to funding.  Richard Veth and Richard Allen, members of Space Center Rotary, were elected to the first Board of Trustees of Freeman Memorial Library.  Since that time, numerous Rotarians and Rotary Anns (Rotarians' wives) have served on the Library Board.  Club members also participated in a variety of projects at the library: renovating the building, changing of partitions, constructing shelving, painting and landscaping.  There was also a repainting job on the library by club members.

      January 10, 2011

      HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
"My vision for the future of the club is to become more and more relevant to the
community and more and more relevant to each other."   President David Coney

Welcome back to Rotary!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season.  My family and I had a fantastic Christmas and a very Happy New Year and I hope yours did also.  Two weeks off from Rotary felt like an eternity and I am ready and eager to see everyone again on Monday.  This is going to be a great 2011 for Space Center Rotary Club!  Half of this Rotary year is already over and I am so excited as to what we can accomplish in the second half of the year.  It is going to be a lot of fun providing service to the beneficiaries that are in our service budget.

I have said from the beginning that the three things Rotarians do best are to: raise money, spend it on meaningful service projects, and have fun doing it.  One project that is coming up soon is a hands-on clean-up, fix-up, and paint-up fun time at Hope Village.  Hope Village is one of our major beneficiaries this year and one of the things we plan to do is to improve the recreation room for the residents.  Not only will it look great when we get through, but will encourage the residents to use it much more

I am also excited about the high school scholarships, teacher of the year, new oven project, and all of the other projects in our service budget that we have yet to fund.  I am truly committed to making sure we use every cent budgeted to make a material impact on our community and the world.

We do a lot of things right in Space Center Rotary.  I am proud of our rich culture and history.  I think to understand where we are, it is important to see where we came from.  If you have not already done so, I encourage you to browse our History Web Page at
http://www.spacecenterrotary.info/.  I am so proud of all the things we have done in our history and it makes me excited to be one of the people who helps decide where we are going next.

My vision for the future of the club is to become more and more relevant to the community and more and more relevant to each other.  I think one of the critical things that we can do better as a club on becoming more relevant is to improve our communications.  The flow of information is critical for the club to be successful and to help improve on this, we are in the process of improving our club web site including a new web page.  However we must keep in mind that the web site is only a tool and only the first step.  We all must work together to ensure it contains meanful and relevant information.  I would like for this web page to tell our wonderful story for outsiders as well as be an easy and convenient way to find information about what is happening in the club.

Our future is going to be bright!  I hope you all come to Rotary Monday rejuvenated after a long break and ready to have a great start to 2011.

      John Branch introduced
Jim McInvale (right) of Gallery Furniture.  Gallery Furniture has consistently ranked in the top 100 furniture stores in sales, and has extended considerable charitable support to (among others) the Houston Rodeo, the USO, and Helping a Hero Homes.  Mr. McInvale attributed his success to hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence.  He noted that a key to any success story is the attitude change from “what can people do for me”, to “what can I do for them”.  He relayed stories about his family history and about several prominent Houstonians, touched on the challenges for 2011 and the impact of what the Wall Street Journal calls the “great Texas migration”.  Mike Dennard extended thanks and a gift to Mr. McInvale for his presentation.  Editor's note: View photos of Jim as our program speaker over the years.

Members were reminded that this week is the Clear Creek Independent School District Livestock Show.  Please plan to attend and support the program.  The meeting was adjourned by President Elect Dennard.

      Update on Floyd Boze
      email received Sunday March 6

Ann, his daughter, writes:  We are still in the hospital.  Dad made it through the surgery well and went to rehab.  Since then, he has had pneumonia and they suspect at least 2 strokes.  The drs are not optimistic about any recovery.  At this time, he processes infomation and can respond by following simple commands.  He has trouble keeping his eyes open.  I am meeting again with all his drs on Tuesday.  If he still needs to be hooked up to IVs, we'll probably go to a skilled nursing rehab facility until he is no longer in need of IVs.  If he doesn't need anything, we will probably go home with home health coming in.  He really can't communicate back to us except to answer us by shaking his head.  I am so glad he got to come to Rotary on his 93rd birthdayand tell everyone how much they all have meant to him.  Please ask that our family be lifted up in prayer through this difficult time.
      Thanks,

Hi David,  The Rotary Club of Copan, Honduras has extended to us an invitation to come down and take part in learning about, promoting and meeting with the families in the community where the Ecocinas will be distributed, thanks to Space Center Rotary's donation to them.  I am thinking of going in May, and I'd love it if there is anyone else who would like to go down, too.  We have been invited to speak at their Rotary club as well.  Will you please make their invitation known to our club so that if there is anyone else who would like to go, they could make that know to me before I make my reservations?

      Update on the Club's History

All the available history record; documents, electronic archives, photos, negatives, and slides have been reviewed and organized into Rotary years and representatively archived and placed on the Club History website http://www.spacecenterrotary.info/ except for four years out of the 46 Rotary years.  In addition, there are information and photos which support the material on the website, electronically archived on a Rotary year basis outside the web site.

The compilation of electronically archiving the history record on a Rotary year basis is called Phase I.  (Please note the Rotary Year histories contain or has links to all the available representative information for that year and is the navigator for that year.)  Recognizing that a Rotary year does not necessarily reflect the entire story for an activity, a theme history will be developed to reflect the totality of an activity.  There are many projects or activities which spanned several years.  For instance, there were activities such as the Shuttle Payload Project, the Three Wishes, Project Free Enterprise, and the Bolivia Water Well project which cannot be completely told in one year.  Such activities will be compiled in a history under a theme heading rather than on Rotary year basis.  This is Phase II.

Phase III will to compile a complete narrative history which spans all the years.  This history will have a long and short version.  Further, statistics on the Club over the years, such as the membership, the Paul Harris Fellows awarded, and the amount of money raised by fundraisers can be viewed separately and also will be part of the narrative history.

In addition to the history record, there is a memorial section on the Club’s deceased members and all the exchanged banners are electronically archived.  Both can be accessed from the Club History Home Page.

In summary there are 4 Rotary Year histories to be written, 7 that have been written and under review by the respective President, and the remainder complete.

The regular meeting of the Space Center Rotary was held April 11th at the Bay Oaks Country Club.  Jack Bacon led members singing, Dennis Dillon gave the prayer, Marilyn Musial led the Four Way Test, and John Branch  led the Pledge of Allegiance.  Ralph Kramer introduced guests.

Geoff Atwater and Bob Taggart recapped plans for Springoree on April 21st.  Event tickets and raffle tickets were on sale. See more below.

      John Branch introduced
Dr. Jack Bacon, Club member and member of the Engineers Without Borders - Johnson Space Center Chapter.  The Engineers Without Borders Johnson Space Center (EWB-JSC) chapter is an association of JSC employees, contractors and other professionals in the Houston/Clear Lake area who volunteer their time to participate in sustainable projects in the developing world by addressing people's basic human needs and provide necessities by partnering with the local communities.

Dr. Bacon made a very informative presentation on projects EWB had done and was planning in Rwanda, Africa.
Read more about this exciting country.  The marvels of technology and man's desire to share their talents and skills to help others paved the way to make such projects a reality.  Dr. Bacon covered a water treatment system, solar ovens, and pinpoint irrigation system, all which improves health and economical well being.  It was interesting to hear about the organic dried fruits that were being raised and dried processed using solar ovens rather than by burning with its carbon emissions;  and the novel way the water was treated and purified using solar to supply ultraviolet lighting.  More of the works and plans of the Engineers Without Borders can be viewed on its web site.

The meeting was adjourned by President Coney.

Origin of Excellence in Public Service Awards

The Law Enforcement Distinguished Service Award was developed by Dr. David Taylor, Club President 1994-95, in 1993 utilizing the organizational model he developed for the excellence in teaching award.  One outstanding feature was that it was not an award for "bravery", as important as that sometimes is in law enforcement, but an award for excellence in upholding the law in a professional way and serving the community.  The criteria were: professionalism, effectiveness, community involvement, and valor.  Read more on the story. Over $36,000 has been awarded  to outstanding Law Enforcement Officers/EMT's/Firefighters since 1993.

A regular meeting of the Space Center Rotary Club was held at Bay Oaks Country Club on April 25.  The meeting was called to order by President David Coney.  Jack Bacon kicked off the meeting leading members singing “The Yellow Rose of Texas”.  Wayne Young led the Pledge of Allegiance, Stan Galinski led the Four Way Test, and Dennis Dillon gave the prayer.  Bob Wren introduced visitors and guests.

Roger Donnelly reminded members that the Floyd Boze/Paul Harris dinner is May 12 at Bay Oak Country Club.  Tickets are $30.  RSVP to Roger via email, and include your preference for steak or chicken.  President Coney reminded members that Teacher of the Year awards will be presented May 16th at South Shore Harbor.  He thanked Micki Czarnik for hosting our visitors from Japan over Easter weekend.  Rotary golf is scheduled for Wednesday.  Contact Dick Hergert by 2 pm Tuesday if you want to play.

John Branch (second from left) introduced Houston Mayor Annise Parker.   The Mayor’s presentation focused on the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, redistricting, and implementation of the Proposition One drainage fee.  The drainage fee is effective July 1, but sample bills will be mailed out in May.  The final redistricting plan should be passed by Council in May, sent to the Attorney General in June for final approval, and will hopefully go into effect in July.  Due to provisions of the Voting Rights Act and the impact of redistricting on neighborhoods around Kingwood, Kingwood and Clear Lake will have to remain in the same district.

Mayor Parker noted that we are beginning to pull out of the recession, but that since government trails the economy, this will probably be the City’s worst year from a financial standpoint.  Based on appraisal district reports, there is a significant income shortfall.  The City has approximately 21,000 employees, down about 500 since she took office, mostly due to efficiency improvements.  There are about a dozen people on her executive team. The City has saved an estimated $5 million through mandatory furloughs for non-essential employees.  They are currently looking at aged Accounts Receivable for additional income improvements.

The Mayor touched on the cutbacks at NASA/Johnson Space Center, and the City’s support for efforts to have JSC remain the home of mission control and astronaut training.  The City is also supporting efforts to recruit Emery Riddle University to locate here.  Emery Riddle is the largest aeronautical university in the country.  She reported that the drainage fees will be assessed to owners based on total amount of impervious land surface owned.  Schools and churches that currently have 100% exemption status will be exempt from the fee.   In response to questions, she reported that the City’s rainy day fund was at $20 million, but has not been replenished since Hurricane Ike.  She answered questions concerning the relationship between the City and the Port of Houston, major economic industries, and unfunded City pension and benefit programs.  At the conclusion of her presentation,
President Coney (right) expressed appreciation for her attendance and presented a token of thanks from the Club.

Scott Rainey presented a check for $1,200 to
      Kim Reed
(right),  President of Builders with Borders of Texas.  The funds will be used for college scholarship programs in Carbonera Mexico.  Mr. Reed gave a brief overview of their programs and reported that the group will be going to Haiti June 4-10, and to Rio Bravo Mexico June 22-25 with Dr. Greg Clariday to do eye surgeries.

President Coney announced a last chance to buy District raffle tickets as the conference is this weekend and adjourned the meeting.

"The Best Rotary Social in Years" .....  Roger Donnelly

The second annual Paul Harris/Floyd Boze Fellow Dinner was  "The Best Rotary Social in Years" said  Roger Donnelly.  About thirty were in attendance including Floyd Boze, his Daughter and Grand Daughter.  This was Floyd's first social gathering since he got out of the hospital.  Also in attendance were future District Governors Chris Schneider and  Bob Gebhart.  We gathered at the Bay Oaks Country Club Thursday, May 12th.  The evening was full of great stories about Rotary and fond memories was shared with Floyd Boze; I believe this is what made it so fun.  After an update on The Rotary Foundation, at least 8 people got up to share stories and even Floyd spoke up when he made some comments about how Rotarians are at their best when they are having fun.  Bob Wren did a wonderful update on the SCRC endowment foundation and also let us know about a very exciting project for a Fallen Astronaut Memorial.  The banners that Art Oswald had made listing all of our Paul Harris/Floyd Boze Fellows in club history were on display and soon two more names will be added.  Sheryl Berg received a Paul Harris Fellow and PE Mike Dennard received a Floyd Boze Fellow.  Thank you to Roger Donnelly and Art Oswald for planning such a wonderful event.  Remarks by President Coney.

The Rotary Clubs of Space Center, League City, and Seabrook; and the Clear Creek Independent School District School (CCISD) hosted the third Rotary/CCISD Teacher of the Year Awards on May 16th at the South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center.  The convention center was filled with about 300 teachers, their families and friends, and Rotarians.  The Clear Brook Jazz Ensemble entertained the group before the program began.  Birda Gaskin, President of League City Rotary, opened the meeting and the Clear Falls Color Guard presented the U. S. Flag for the pledge of alliance.  Michael Huss, President of the Seabrook Rotary Club, gave the innovation and lead in the Four Way Test.  He also spoke about “what Rotary is not”.  President Coney gave a brief history of the Teacher of the Year Award.

Dr. Greg Smith, Superintendent of CCISD, began the program by making a few remarks and introducing the six finalists: Gwen Cash, Clear Creek High School; Tom Dinardis, Westbrook Immediate; Donna Stone, Clear Brook High School; Barbara Scott, Brookwood Elementary; Kortney Peterson, Hyde Elementary; Mishelle Azbell, Robinson Elementary.  From these finalists, Barbara Scott, Brookwood Elementary; and Donna Stone, Clear Brook High School were named the Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year respectively.  Each finalist received a plaque of appreciation and $500 each.  The Teachers of the Year received an additional $500.  View the program cover and other associated information.

Footnote: It is interesting to note that the Club’s Dr. David Taylor originated the idea of excellence in education and established the program in 1991, making this the 21st year to honor teachers. This year forty four teachers were nominated by their peers as representatives of the best in the CCISD.  A team of district administrators made the difficult task of determining six finalists.  A committee of administrators and Rotary Club representatives then selected the Elementary Teacher of the Year and the Secondary Teacher of the Year from those six finalists.

Past District Governor Suzi Howe inducted new member Keith Owens (right) sponsored by Olive Murphy-Riker.  Keith is employed by Prudential Gary Greene Realtors.  President Coney awarded $1,000 "Service Above Self" scholarship to two Interact students based on achieving academic excellence, exhibiting outstanding leadership in community outreach, and  actively involved in extra curricular activities.  Read more about these two outstanding students; Sara Maben and Siddharth Arora.

John Branch introduced Jim Sweeney as the program speaker.  Jim along with his partner and wife of 28 years, Jane, has owned and operated Minuteman Press-Bay Area, a full service printing company in the Clear Lake area.  Jim has very recently started up a new company, Big Daddy Marketing, LLC, a Managed Marketing Services company.  Jim gave a preseetnation on QR Code.  A QR code (abbreviation for Quick Response code) is a specific matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code) that is readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and camera telephones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded may be text, URL, or other data.  Common in Japan, where it was created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994, the QR code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. The QR code was created to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.  The technology has seen frequent use in Japan and South Korea, however, in the West there has been a slower adoption of QR codes.

President Coney  gave Jim an engraved Rotary paper weight and adjourned the meeting.

      Work at Hope Village Begins

Installing a wall to make a large storage room in the recreation building at Hope Village began last week.  Phil Messarra, Friendswood Rotary Club and frequent visitor to our Club, headed up the project.  The new room is 30 by 12 feet and will be used as an additional storage in the recreation building.  Currently miscellaneous material, chairs, and props from stage plays were scattered throughout the building making it difficult to use the exercise equipment (more photos will be in a later issue).  Phil Harris brought eleven of his associates to help clean up, straighten up, organize, and fix up the building.  As President Coney said “they were awesome”.  Finishing work remains to be done, but the recreation building is now well organized and useable.
